Routes of transmission

Routes of transmission of cold and influenza viruses: Viruses are typically transmitted via:

  • Airborne droplets (aerosols) – sneezing, coughing, even talking;
  • Direct contact with infected nasal secretions – shaking hands, kissing, hugging;
  • Fomites (contaminated objects) – by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose;
