Frequently asked questions

What is AGOVIRAX®?

AGOVIRAX® is a medical device for the prevention and supportive treatment of viral upper respiratory tract infections. AGOVIRAX® is available in two forms: AGOVIRAX® nasal spray and AGOVIRAX® lozenges.

Which viral infections can AGOVIRAX® help prevent?

AGOVIRAX® helps protect against viral upper respiratory tract infections (reduces the amount of viruses in the nasopharyngeal mucosa by up to 92%¹), including COVID-19 (reduces the risk of contracting COVID-19 by up to 80%²).

How does AGOVIRAX® work?

The iota-carrageenan in AGOVIRAX® forms a protective layer that prevents viruses from attaching, thus reducing their replication and spread. Detailed information about AGOVIRAX®’s mechanism of action can be found in the “About AGOVIRAX®” section on our website.

How does iota-carrageenan differ from kappa and lambda carrageenans?

Scientific studies show that to achieve the same virus-inhibiting effect, iota-carrageenan requires 10 times lower concentration than kappa or lambda carrageenans. This makes iota-carrageenan more effective in protecting against common cold viruses.¹²

How long will AGOVIRAX® keep you protected after using it?

A single spray protects against common cold viruses for up to 3 hours.

How quickly does AGOVIRAX® start working?

AGOVIRAX® works immediately, and its effect lasts up to 3 hours. Therefore, in situations with an increased risk of virus exposure, regular use of AGOVIRAX® is recommended.

When should I use AGOVIRAX®?

To reduce the risk of catching cold viruses, AGOVIRAX® is recommended in high-risk situations, such as crowded places, schools, medical facilities, and during travel. It can also be used at the first signs of a cold (sneezing, sore throat, runny nose).

How often can I use AGOVIRAX®?

AGOVIRAX® can be used regularly as needed, as it poses no risk of dependence or overdose.

Standard usage for nasal spray: at the first signs of a common cold (e.g., sore throat, tingling, runny nose), spray once into each nostril at least 3 times a day.

Standard usage for lozenges: use several times a day, typically 3–6 times, depending on individual needs. Do not exceed six lozenges per day to avoid a possible laxative effect.

Can I use AGOVIRAX® if I already have a cold or flu?

Yes, AGOVIRAX® can be used as a supportive treatment to help reduce the severity and duration of common cold and flu symptoms.

Is AGOVIRAX® safe for children and pregnant women?

Yes, AGOVIRAX® is safe for adults, children from 1 year of age (lozenges from 6 years of age), pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. It poses no risk of overdose and is suitable for long-term use.

Are there any side effects?

AGOVIRAX® is generally well-tolerated. Currently, no adverse effects are known, except for rare cases of hypersensitivity. However, if you experience any unusual reactions, consult a healthcare professional.
